How to Choose the Right Surf Bikini

Friday, April 29th, 2011

This week’s video is another specially for girls, our surfing chicas out there. While your bikini might seem like the last thing to focus on when going out to surf (after a good wax, leash etc), it is definitely going to be one of the most prevalent things that will certainly ruin a good surf session if your bikini is not behaving the way it should and staying in place. So here are a few tips on what to look for in a bikini, that will make surfing with it on, a bit more pleasurable.

VIDEO: HOW TO CHOOSE the right surf bikini

Tips from the Video

  • Connects in the Front: Choose a bikini that has an area in the front that is covered or connected – either a sports bra bikini that covers the entire area or a string bikini where the two front triangles, are sewn together so there is very possibility for movement of the front.
  • Cross in the back: Bikinis that cross in the back give you extra pull near the top of the back area to ensure that the front of your bikini doesn’t move. So find one that crosses in the back somehow that allows you to tie it really tight.
  • Choose Bottoms with String Ties: With the waves coming at you and its time to retreat in the water letting the board go, the last thing you want to let loose is your bottoms. One of the best tips is to find a bikini that lets you tie the entire bottom on one side to tighten. String bikinis with ties on two sides will be too easy to untie on both areas.

Favorite Bikini Tips from our Facebook Fan Page:

  • Alexis Clarkson: “I’m a fan of triangle halter tops with boy short bottoms: strings don’t quite keep things where they belong!”
  • Cindy Jo Jovanovic: “Halter bikini tops and boardshorts with a rashguard = no adjustments and hassle-free surfing.”

Thanks for your tips ladies! If anyone else has any comments or tips, feel free to share pictures or commentary to feature on our blog!

How to Know Your Surf Stance

Friday, April 15th, 2011

In surfing and almost any other board sport you will hear reference to the term, “regular foot” or “goofy foot” and for those who have no idea what this is, we’ve made a short video on how to find out whether you are regular or goofy! Whether your right foot should be in front, or your left foot and just which foot your leash is supposed to go on.

VIDEO: How to know your surf stance

Tips from the Video

  • Draw a Line: Then look at something in the distance and walk. The foot that steps out first is usually your ‘weak’ foot, and that is the foot that is in front. Your strong leg will stay in the back and that is the foot that is supporting the weight on your board.
  • Have a friend push you: Have a friend push you (unknowingly) one day and again, whichever foot steps out front, is the foot that is in front when you surf.
  • Regular Foot: This is when your left foot is in front, and your right foot is at the back. Your leash as a regular foot is on the back leg, your right leg.
  • Goofy Foot: This is when your right foot is in front, and your left foot is at the back. Your leash as a goofy foot is on the back leg, your left leg.

How to Carry Your Surfboard

Friday, April 15th, 2011

When we look at these long daunting beginner boards, many people ask us, “How do I carry one of those things!”? Yes, while they are long and sometimes very heavy, there are tricks and tips to carrying the long board during surfing conditions that will get you catching the most waves! Here’s a video on how WE do it!

VIDEO: How to Carry Your Surfboard

Ways to Carry your surfboard from the video

  1. On Your Hip: There is a center of the very long surfboard that will stay flat if you rest it on the right place. Find that place and rest it on the top of your hip. Your hand (should be able to) grab the other side of the board and hold it perpendicular to the ground.
  2. On Your Head: Carry the board with the fins facing upwards and nose facing downwards. Again, you will have to find the center of the board that rests on your head flat, then with two arms, carry the sides (rails) of the board.
  3. With a Friend: If you have a friend with a board as well, lay both boards flat on the ground and each person stands one at the top of the boards and one at the bottom – these are the smallest areas of the board to carry with your arms. Then with two people at both ends, you will be able to carry two boards easily!

If you have any comments or any other ways to carry your surfboard (your very long surfboard), please let us know and we will be happy to post on the blog to share with others!

How to Wax Your Surfboard

Friday, April 15th, 2011

For many beginner surfers, this might just be a part of surfing that is easily left out when you’re renting a board or taking a lesson – because everything is set up for you! (How nice.) Now that you’re hopefully getting into buying your own or first surfboard, here is a quick and easy video on how to start waxing your own board, what kind of wax you need and often do you really need to wax?

VIDEO: How to Wax Your Surfboard

Tips from the Video

  • Base Coat: This is used as the bottom layer to keep the layer of wax to sticking to your board. It’s not a personal choice as mentioned in the video, but it is an option for those starting off with new boards and want to make sure their wax sticks!
  • Top Coat: This is the type of wax that is based on the kind of water you will be surfing in. The different degrees of water determines the kind of wax you need to buy – ask your local vendor if they recommend the “cold”, “warm” or “tropical” wax – the colder the temperate for wax, the stickier.
  • Circular motion: In this video we demonstrate a circular motion and long strokes. Again, its a very personal choice, but make sure you cover every area of the board that you will come into contact with when you need to pop up on the board and especially the areas where your feet will be standing. For long boards, we don’t prefer to wax beyond the area that your nose is when you are lying on the board.
  • Tip from the Surfing Community – Zephyr Robb: Where not to wax? Keep the bottom of your board and rails free of wax and unless you are a nose rider there is no need to wax all the way up to the nose, though you never know, better to be prepared! Thanks Zephyr!

If you have other waxing tips, feel free to let us know we would love to hear from you and add them here to the blog!
