Soccer & Surf with Kara Lang

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

After the Olympics in 2008 I decided that I wanted to travel somewhere on my own. We’d been in preparations non-stop for the past two years, constantly traveling all over the world to play other countries to get ready for Beijing. I’d visited Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and been all over China by the end of it- and I never really felt like I’d truly experienced these countries and all they had to offer. I was determined to take a trip where I could live like a local, eat local food, relax, and have my own adventure!

I’d tried surfing a few times while living in Los Angeles, but wanted to take the time to really focus on learning to surf. I did a little bit of research and discovered Del Mar Surf Camp. I contacted Maria right away and signed up.

I’d been to Costa Rica once before, but had only seen the stadium and our hotel- So I was really excited about the idea of spending a week exploring the beach and the Jungle of Jaco and Hermosa. I’m not exactly the kind of person who can lay on the beach drinking margaritas for a week straight, so the idea of a vacation where I could explore and be active was really appealing to me.

My surf lessons went really well and I was instantly hooked. By the second day I was already looking into buying my own board when I got back home to L.A. The yoga was the perfect compliment to the surf sessions since my arms- not used to paddling so much yet- got pretty sore and tired after a few days.

Aside from the surfing, my second favorite thing about Costa Rica is the food! Bananas, Strawberries, pineapple, Papaya- all the fruit there tastes like it’s from another planet! Maria took us to a bunch of local spots to eat- places you would never even know to try if you came to Costa Rica on your own.

I think this is probably the one thing that Del Mar Surf Camp offers that no other camps do- a true Costa Rican experience. From the moment you sign up, the staff at Del Mar treats you like a friend. They’re so proud of their country and they want you to experience it just like they do. You feel less like you’re on vacation and more like you’re visiting a friend who’s showing you around their hometown.

I love coming back to surf with Maria and her crew and I’m so stoked to be working with Del Mar Surf Camp and have the opportunity to now share my favorite place in the world with others.

Now on top of the Surf and Yoga Camp, we’ll be offering a Surf and Soccer Package! Maria and I came up with the idea to bring girls to Costa Rica for Surf and Soccer camps because we felt like it was a perfect fit. Soccer is such a huge part of Costa Rican culture that it just makes sense! Plus, we knew that active, strong, fearless, and adventurous girls that play soccer would instantly fall in love with surfing too. The instructors at Del Mar Surf camp are so awesome that I’m confident that anyone I bring out will have a blast learning to surf with them. It will be the perfect balance between hard work on the soccer field and fun in the ocean!

In addition to the highly professional surf instructors teaching the surf lessons, girls will have the opportunity to be coached on the field by my teammates from the Canadian National Women’s Soccer Team and myself. It’s an opportunity to improve a skill you already have and learn a completely new one! …All while enjoying the beautiful sunshine of Costa Rica with your closest friends!

I’m truly so excited about this camp because I know that it’s the kind of experience I would have loved to have when I was a kid.

What’s Up with Del Mar Surf Camp?

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Welcome to the first post on our new blog here at Del Mar Surf Camp! We have been dying to start a blog for the longest time because of all the cool neat things we’d love to share with you about the camp and surfing in Costa Rica – and now we can!

The Biggest Changes? Co-Ed!

If you notice, we have a new website!. But the change to the look and feel is not the only thing that’s changed – we’ve updated our packages and surf camp to all ages and groups – including men! We are still keeping our world class WOMEN’S ONLY package, that has made us the camp we are today. With the number of requests growing for male additions, we figured it was time to open up our camp for everyone to enjoy!

New Team

While browsing through the site, you’ll notice that with the changes we’ve made some changes to the team, most notably our Hermosa Beach location’s new head instructor is Josymar Fuentes! Lost team rider & local Costa Rican surfer for over 15 years. He’s a ton of fun & you can check his little introduction here on our Meet the Staff page!

And then, there’s me. While I am not a surf instructor I am Del Mar Surf Camp’s new marketing chica, who loves writing up a storm, keeping active on Facebook & Twitter and producing videos! Originally from Canada, I first discovered Del Mar Surf Camp after winning a contest from Much Music (Canada’s version of MTV), and after six months couldn’t keep away from lifestyle I’ve become so fond of known as, Pura Vida!.

Special for all Del Mar Surf Camp-ers! Want a free surf camp vacation?

With all the new changes going on and how excited we are to offer our new packages, that we couldn’t have come with a better time to showcase our very first offer for all of our Del Mar Surf Camp supporters! Essentially, if you book anytime between now and the end of January and use the following voucher, you’ll receive $100 off ANY surf package at our Nosara & Hermosa locations!

AND…

If you share the promotion on this page (must be from this page) by click on the Twitter & Facebook buttons there, you will be entered to qualify for a free 5-day surf vacation at our Playa Hermosa location! Yes, this includes airport transfers, luxury beachfront accommodations and all of your surf lessons & equipment for the week!

And that’s it! That’s quite a bit we’ve introduced, but we couldn’t be happier to get surfing again. It’s our summer time here again, surfing season is starting and the sun is shining relentlessly. If you have any questions, comments or just want to share some love for the new site, feel free to let me know – I’d love to hear about them all!

Pura vida,
Angie
