Del Mar Surf Camp Launches Fitness Vacations and Surf Camps for Youth
October 20th, 2011
Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica October 19, 2011.
Del Mar Surf Camp announces their last Surf, Detox and Yoga Retreat of the year from December 2 – 9, 2011 located in luxury beachfront villas of central pacific, Costa Rica. They are the pioneers of surf camp vacations incorporating lifestyle and nutritional changes to revolutionize the industry of vacations and retreats. More than ever, customers are lining up to rediscover their vitality of life, one active vacation at a time. This year, Del Mar Surf Camp is ready to meet that demand with the exciting introduction of two new companies.
DEL MAR EXTREME – Sport, Adventure & Fitness Vacations
With the growing popularity of Stand Up Paddling, also known to some as “SUP”, Del Mar Extreme is the first to offer Stand Up Paddle lessons and tours in Playa Hermosa, Jaco. While seemingly less intense than surfing, Stand Up Paddling is a sport created by pro-surfer Laird Hamilton to work out the body’s core muscles, while establishing balance and momentum on a long board. The Del Mar Extreme vacation package incorporates several fitness based adventure tours such as stand up paddling, to allow you to enjoy being in Costa Rica without feeling like you are at a boot camp. Other sport adventures include: Mountain Biking, Kayaking, Power Walks & Hikes. So, whether you are a surfer, office worker, parent, athlete – Del Mar Extreme’s only goal? Making sure you feel better about yourself through exercises of the mind, body and soul.
DEL MAR SURFING ACADEMY – Surf Camp For Kids & Teens
It’s no surprise when recent day popular culture singles out the growing obesity program in the youth today. By incorporating a social environment, culture immersion and surfing, Del Mar Surfing Academy’s surf camp targets kids and teens worldwide to challenge themselves in a weeklong excursion of self-discovery – a new physical kind of self discovery. Business owners, camp directors and moms – Maria Del Mar Alfaro and Bettina Del Rio, found themselves as teens because of surfing and today, they want to share this passion with new generations. They are confident that by putting this program together for the kids & teens: learning new skills, speak a different language, discover a new culture, trying out new sports, falling in love with nature and wildlife, while in the company of others all around the world – that this experience will change the lives of the youth, in ways they never thought was possible of themselves. Watch Video of Last Surf Camp at Del Mar Surfing Academy with a group from Florida, USA.
ABOUT DEL MAR SURF CAMP
Founded in 2003 by local Costa Rican, Maria Del Mar, Del Mar Surf Camp has evolved from an exclusive all womens surf camp to a full grown surf school, surf camp and surf tour operator for all ages and groups. Now, expanding into surf and yoga retreats, fitness vacations and youth surf camps, Del Mar Surf Camp only hopes to impact more people and develop the proper tourism standards for Costa Rica. Passionate about her country, Maria Del Mar sheds light into how to choose the right surf camp and what it means in terms of certifications, quality, insurance and peace of mind for all tourists. Surf Costa Rica with LuxyHair [ VIDEO ]
August 17th, 2011
In February this year, we had friends of ours from LuxyHair, who have an amazing business and YouTube channel visit us at Del Mar Surf Camp for a month! Of course, in Del Mar Surf Camp style we took them on a Pacific Coast roadtrip to our other locations in Nosara and Santa Teresa, which consisted of a very exciting off road adventure putting our Land Rover through tough times over sandy beaches and lots of rivers! But in the end, it made for some amazing footage, great memories and an awesome video (see video below too!).
A cool thing about this adventure, was that Mimi (you’ll recognize her from a few of their videos on YouTube), is actually afraid of being in deep waters. Well, with a little persuading and assurance, you can see her conquer her fears by surfing in Santa Teresa with surf instructor, Ismael and then again, the Stand Up Paddle board during a day trip to Isla Tortuga!
We are so happy to have had Alex and Mimi join us in Costa Rica, and let us show them our beautiful homes, as well as to have them document their adventures to share them with the rest of the world from their perspectives! Check out this amazing video they put together – it’s like a movie!
Thanks Alex & Mimi! Pura Vida!

Recap Love Your Body 2011
July 27th, 2011
by Allison Talbird
[ This post is also featured on our sister company site, Del Mar Extreme ]
THANK YOU
We had wonderful people from New Jersey, Canada, and Chicago attend our Love Your Body Retreat 2011. As one of the Directors of Del Mar Extreme, I can say I was proud to be a part of this. The week was full of challenges and surprises, and we all really connected and got to know each other and spend time together bonding in a way that was special. I am so proud of the strength, grace and courage shown by everyone who attended our retreat, each person was willing to try everything new and different to them, and handled everything that was thrown at them with resilience.
We went SUP’ing to a beautiful waterfall in Punta Leona, and did a variety of fitness classes, Ashtanga/Vinyasa Yoga, Pilates, Boxing, Capoeira, Butts and Guts, Hiking and Surfing. Most appreciated was just talking to, learning about and getting to know each other, everyone was so diverse in their backgrounds. Special thanks to Veronica and Enrique for hosting everyone at their beautiful Mangarosa, it is a haven away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life as we know it, it is calm and serene there up on the mountain. And more thanks to Cassidy and Paul of Pura Vida Pantry who made us delicious and healthy meals each and every day. Thanks also to the ladies at Heavenly Massage, Karen, Zuleka and Gendry for wonderful massages for everyone. All of Del Mar Extreme and Del Mar Surf Camp staff learned much ourselves from Love Your Body and from everyone who attended, and we hope to apply this learned knowledge to improve future retreats in Costa Rica. So to everyone who attended, thanks so much for being with us in Costa Rica- we so appreciate the time we were able to spend with you, and hope you will want to visit again one day. Safe travel and Godspeed to all – Ann, Jane, Andrea, Sara, Nelu and Ken, it was so good to be with you! You are all so awesome! Pura Vida!
NEXT YEAR
We are in the midst of planning for our Love Your Body – Yoga & Fitness retreat for 2012! The dates have been set from Saturday June 30 to Saturday July 7! So mark your calendars as we will be releasing new details soon!

Why Nosara, Costa Rica is Special
June 21st, 2011
by Angie Miranda
From San Jose, Costa Rica to Nosara, Guanacaste
I grew up and lived in San Jose all my life. Even though we were constantly traveling to Guanacaste and other parts of Costa Rica for holidays and trips, it wasn’t until I was 22 that I left home for the first time to live at the beach. I got a job at a big resort near Jaco and spent two years there. After that my next job had me travel all over Costa Rica and Nicaragua working with sustainable boutique hotels. I got the chance to see all the most beautiful beaches, jungles, mountains etc. But I have to say, the first time I came to Nosara I truly fell in love.
Playa Guiones, Nosara
I had been here years ago under different circumstances and only passing by. But five years ago I saw Playa Guiones like a place where I would actually like to spend my life. The energy here is something else, I felt it many times walking through the hallways of the former Villas Taype, that would soon transform into the Harmony Hotel. I felt it on the tide pools in South Guiones and heard it on the whispers of the wind at night, rustling the palm leaves. I heard stories about it from the locals, how they say if you swim in the Nosara River you will never leave, and how the energy here is strong because of the Huacas, or native burial grounds that are all over the mountains.
Blue Zone – Live Longer, Better, Happier
Maybe it’s because Nosara is in one of the world’s Blue Zones, where people live the longest, healthiest, happiest lives. I met so many travelers that decided to stop their journeys here, and settle, as well as people who are drawn here year after year.
Following are the reasons why Nosara is special to me, and why I think so many people feel the same way:
Nosara, Costa Rica is a Special Place Because: ….
- In Nosara we surf every day. Guiones is a versatile beach break, fit for beginners and experienced surfers alike. We get to surf in high and low tide, year round in really good conditions. Of course we may be forced out of the water when big swells come and bring 12 to 15 foot waves with them, but aside from that we get warm water and good waves pretty much every day of the year.
- In Nosara people are really healthy. The vibe in this town is very surf, yoga, active lifestyle oriented. It’s common to see people exercising outdoors and practicing all kinds of sports. It’s a really small town so pretty much everything is walking distance or a short bike ride away.
- In Nosara it’s not difficult to eat right. Being vegan it’s sometimes hard to eat anything but the food you prepare yourself, but not here in Nosara. Restaurants are welcoming and very accommodating and nobody gives you a weird look when you ask for a vegetarian pizza with no cheese or rice milk for your coffee. Plus beautiful fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, etc. are available in every supermarket around.
- Nosara is really romantic. Beautiful waves, warm weather, perfect sunsets and secluded beaches… no wonder everyone falls in love here! Nosara is the perfect place to visit with your other half or even meet your soulmate (I know plenty of love stories that began here!). In a place where sunset walks, moonlight sand and bonfires are everyday things it’s hard to want to get back to the normal life.
- In Nosara everyone has dogs. And not only do we have dogs, they are a really important part of our community. Everyone knows each others dogs by name, it’s common that they go to work with their owner and people are quick to care for the needs of these special members of our community.
- In Nosara, Sustainability is a way of life. Most people here are very environmentally conscious, recycling, beach clean ups and tree planting sessions are common, and the community is aware of the key role that we play in preserving our beautiful home the way it is.
- In Nosara, there are no traffic jams. It’s true, our road is bad, unpaved, dusty, muddy, full of potholes that destroy our car’s suspension, but we have no traffic jams except maybe some cows in the middle of the road! Coming from a city I know the amount of stress that being stuck in traffic generates and that is something I definitely do not miss.
The result of this is a community that is healthy, sustainable, romantic, animal-friendly, pretty much stress free with waves year round. Of course we have our issues like any other community, it’s not always dreamland but it is by far the best place I’ve ever known. Surfing, yoga, nice mellow people and lots of dogs, what’s not to love!
[ Del Mar Surf Camp's bi monthly SURF + DETOX retreat is taking place in Nosara on August 20th - August 27th. Our Eco-Luxury Edition. Check it out.]

Love Your Body 2011
June 16th, 2011
Fall in Love With Your Body This Summer
Sister adventure companies in Costa Rica, Del Mar Surf Camp and Del Mar Extreme are coming together for the first time to put on an annual yoga, adventure and fitness retreat called, Love Your Body 2011 from July 2 to July 9. Why? Because of just that. They want you to fall in love with your body again after the long year of take out food, neglected work outs and sometimes even forgetting to breathe, in your daily abundance of responsibilities.
Yoga, Fitness & Adventure Retreat
As a hybrid retreat between the two companies, you can expect a nourishing vacation featuring iconic elements from each – including of course your surf lesson from Del Mar Surf Camp as well as stand up paddling, biking, fitness classes from Del Mar Extreme. Not to mention the uniting quality of both companies that attest to the benefits of yoga when it comes to overall athletic conditioning and flexibility. As a result? Not one, but TWO yoga classes each day.
Organic Vegan Detox & Green Juices
What’s more, is that while the physical conditioning can prove to be quite relentless for those of you who haven’t kept a physical regiment regularly, they have provided just as equal balance of healthy foods that you will be consuming that week. Including organic vegan meals (for those of you that are regular meat eaters – consider this your “vegan detox”) and daily green juices and snacks to supplement your high energy workouts and adventures throughout the day.
Yoga for the Mind, Body & Soul
Of course, what might seem to be like a day packaged of laughter, great food and physical stimulation – there is sufficient time to focus on the most important element of self awareness through Yoga & Meditation inspired by various locations including mountain top, beachfront and in the jungle. Provided twice daily, the opportunity to reinstate your commitment to your mind and soul will be one of the greatest aspects of the retreat, void of any interruptions of modern day technology.
More? Enjoy the Video!
There is so much to mention in this retreat its hard to visualize just what an experience it will be. And so, while technology has allowed us to evolve from limited still frames – the opportunity to showcase the elements of the retreat has been seized in order to give you the best preview of what to expect!
Hope to see you there! Any questions?
