Cleaning Up Costa Rica

By Cleaning Up After Ourselves. Getting involved in beach clean ups in Nosara, Costa Rica to protect our beaches.

Trash collected on Playa Garza clean up last week

Like I’ve mentioned before, probably what I love most about surfing is the closeness to nature, the contact with ocean creatures and the power of a force much greater than us. Frequently when I surf, and especially at a time where ocean environments are so damaged and endangered, I think what life would be like if we couldn’t surf in the ocean because the water is dirty? What would it be like not being able to walk on the beach because it is full of trash? What would the ocean be if all the creatures that live in it got extinct because the water had turned to poison? Definitely not a life worth living, at least in my point of view.

I feel happy to live in a place where there is some awareness in the community regarding the importance of recycling and waste management. Hotels and other local businesses in Nosara are constantly working to find ways to be more sustainable and mitigate the impact of our life on the planet. Recently we started teaming up with the Harmony Hotel on their weekly beach clean ups, which consist not only of picking up the trash in Playa Guiones and its neighbors, but learning and actively participating in the process that takes place later at their recycling center.

Claudia, Nabruk designer, her friend Tavo visiting from Ibiza, Oscar and Kevin, Del Mar Surf Instructors along with Harmony staff members Gerardo, Alex, and Samuel at Playa Guiones clean up this week.

Of course, here in Costa Rica as in other countries, environmental defense is an ongoing battle, and one that we will only win by bringing awareness and education to the people around us. A lot of times that means cleaning up not only after ourselves, but after others, who ignorantly or knowingly dump their plastic bottles and cans on our beaches or close to our rivers, where consequently they are dragged by the water and end up in our beloved ocean.

The next time you are in Nosara, feel free to ask about the weekly beach clean ups, we’ll for sure have an extra trash bag for you and always appreciate a helping hand.
